I’d never planned what to do in this exact situation, so I just froze. That said, I’ve always been nervous about encountering chikan on the train. If women here do get assaulted, it seems like that’s where it happens. The scariest part is that it seems impossible to bring creeps to justice because they can grope you and then disappear at the next stop. By the time you report them, they’re long gone. Then it happened – I felt someone run their hand up my butt.
I refuse to allow myself to just be a passive victim. So, if I ever do get groped on the train, what can I do to make sure the guy is brought to justice? If it were the U.S., I would grab his arm to make sure he didn’t get away. I would also shout to everyone around me what he had done and make sure everyone could see his face. I’m an American woman and have lived in Japan for a few years now.
